From Leo to Shield: A Stronger Privacy Wallet on Aleo

When Provable acquired Leo Wallet in November 2025, we made a commitment: continue supporting Leo users while building something better. Shield is that something better.

Since launching in February 2026, Shield has introduced fully private transactions, free private transfers, private stablecoins through USDCx and USAD, and an experience designed to make privacy the starting point rather than an option you configure. It represents the next generation of what a privacy wallet on Aleo should be.

Leo Wallet pioneered a private wallet experience on Aleo and served the community well for years. The Demox Labs team built something that mattered at a time when the ecosystem needed it most. But the network has evolved and the standard for what a privacy wallet can deliver has changed. Shield is built for where Aleo is going, not where it's been.

Today, we are asking Leo Wallet users to make the move to Shield. This post explains why, and walks through exactly how to do it.

Why Shield

The short version: Shield does everything Leo Wallet does, with stronger privacy, lower friction, and a broader feature set.

Shield is state-of-the-art when it comes to privacy-preserving wallets in crypto. When you open Shield, your transactions are encrypted from the start. Balances, amounts, sender, receiver, and transaction history are all hidden using zero-knowledge proofs. You don’t opt into privacy. Privacy is the baseline.

Private transactions in Shield are free. Provable covers the network fees so users can transact privately without holding ALEO for transaction fees. Leo Wallet requires users to pay standard transaction fees on every transaction, including private ones.

Shield supports private stablecoins. USDCx, issued by Circle, and USAD, issued by Paxos, are both available natively in Shield. These are the first tier-1 private stablecoins on any blockchain. Leo Wallet has no private stablecoin support.

Shield is available on iOS, Android, and as a Chrome browser extension. Whether you prefer mobile with biometric security or a browser-based workflow, Shield meets you where you are.

Shield includes built-in bridging from Ethereum, Bitcoin, Base, and many more chains while offering connections to the growing Aleo dApp ecosystem. It is a complete wallet, not just a transaction signer.

Moving from Leo to Shield is not a lateral move, it’s an upgrade across every dimension that matters for a privacy wallet.

What happens to Leo Wallet

Leo Wallet will continue to function during the migration period. Your funds are safe, your seed phrase still works, and nothing changes about your account until you decide to move.

Over time, Leo Wallet will potentially lose some functionality due to the fact that it will not be further updated and may become incompatible with new versions of relevant operating systems and other software. Development of new features is focused entirely on Shield. The product roadmap, integrations, and the ecosystem momentum all live in Shield now.

We will communicate timelines clearly and well in advance. No one will wake up to find their wallet inaccessible without warning. But the direction is clear: Shield is the future of private wallets on Aleo, and we want every Leo user to benefit from it.

How to migrate

Migration takes just a few short minutes. There is no token bridge, no conversion step, and no risk of losing funds. Your seed phrase or private key is all you need.

Step 1: Back up your seed phrase. Open Leo Wallet, go to Settings, and verify you have your 12 or 24-word seed phrase saved securely offline. If you have not backed it up yet, do this first. Write it down on paper. Do not store it digitally.

Step 2: Download Shield. The app is available on iOS (App Store), Android (Google Play), and as a Chrome browser extension. Visit shield.app for direct download links.

Step 3: Import your wallet. Open Shield and select “Import Existing Wallet.” Enter your seed phrase. Shield will generate your wallet from the same keys, and your balances will sync automatically.

If you already have a Shield wallet, new accounts can be imported by clicking your account in the top left corner, selecting “Add” and importing via Seed Phrase or Private Key.

Step 4: Verify your balances. Confirm that your public and private balances appear correctly in Shield. If you had private (shielded) balances in Leo, they will carry over. Allow up to a minute for everything to sync.

That’s it! Once your wallet is imported into Shield, you have full access to your funds and can begin using all of Shield’s features immediately. Your Leo Wallet will continue to work in parallel until it is formally sunset, but Shield is now your primary wallet on Aleo.

Importing via private key

If you prefer to import using your Aleo private key rather than a seed phrase, Shield supports that as well. In the import flow, select the private key option and enter your key. The same sync process applies.

Note: importing via private key gives you access to the same account, but seed phrase import is recommended when possible because it preserves the full derivation path and is consistent with how Shield manages accounts natively.

Your funds, your keys

Both Leo Wallet and Shield are non-custodial. Provable has never had access to your funds, your private keys, or your seed phrase. That does not change during migration.

When you import your seed phrase into Shield, you are not transferring funds through Provable’s systems. You are generating the same wallet from the same keys on a new client. Your assets live on the Aleo blockchain, secured by your seed phrase. The wallet is just the window.

A reminder that applies here as it does everywhere: Provable support will never ask for your seed phrase. Anyone who does is attempting a scam.

Getting help

If you run into any issues during migration, the following resources are available:

The Shield support hub at support.shield.app has a dedicated migration guide with step-by-step instructions and troubleshooting for common scenarios.

The Leo Wallet Discord server is also monitored by our support team.

You can ask questions in either channel.

Looking forward

Leo Wallet laid the groundwork for private transactions on Aleo. That contribution to the ecosystem is real and worth recognizing. What we are building with Shield carries that work forward with a broader vision: a wallet where privacy is not a feature you enable but the foundation on which everything runs.

We look forward to welcoming every Leo user into the next chapter of private finance on Aleo.
